In 2019, I founded a local chapter of FIGMENT in Jacksonville, FL. FIGMENT is a global nonprofit dedicated to building community through participatory art. Immediately after, the Coronavirus pandemic broke out, putting a hold on all planned events. To adapt to the situation, we sought to build community in quarantine through socially distanced treasure hunt events. Participants had to solve puzzles and riddles leading them from location to location, scanning AR murals and QR codes in search of a final interactive art installation.
We hope to be able to produce large scale participatory art festivals in the near future when it is safe to do so.
FIGMENT is volunteer-run. Want to get involved? Contact us at Jacksonville@FIGMENTproject.org

The first treasure hunt went through the five points neighborhood, beginning by scanning the iconic lizard mural with the Artivive AR app. The final installation, made of found and recycled materials, had an under-the-sea treasure chest theme and encouraged participants to leave messages of hope in bottles.
The second treasure hunt moved further south into Avondale - starting at Boone Park, going by the augmented Swan Dive mural, and eventually ending at the Human Cocoon - an art installation made of natural and found materials that invited participants to crawl inside the cocoon, sit on the cushion, and embark on a guided meditation printed on a canvas in front of them that aimed to facilitate acceptance, growth, and transformation.
